The Experts, 1837

There are artists who placed hidden witty commentaries on their artwork and a lot of people find this hilarious especially that time before Joke of the Day calendars were released. “The Experts”, created by Alexandre Decamps, is one of these artworks and was made after the artist experienced repeated rejection from the French Academy of Painting. “The Experts” was made to depict various art snobs (represented by monkeys) who are obsessed with a more conventional painting.

The Flatterers, 1592

The 16th century was famous for producing odd and abstract paintings, and it is also during this time when the “The Flatterers” was created. This painting was painted by Pieter Brueghel in an attempt to portray pretentious people who try too hard to please their superiors.

He did not intend to make it look funny but in some way people find it hilarious.
