2000-2010 – The Decade That Music Died

Over the past ten years a majority of the top ten songs on the Billboard charts has been consistent trendsetters. Songs that have saturated radio airwaves by the masses are placed in constant rotation to enthrall us. These songs appeal to a certain audience that often allow those in the music industry to capitalize on the opportunity to gain new fans of the most popular genres of music today. But some of these genres of today music have lost the luster for true music lovers, that they often resort to the classic CD’s from their youth just to hear music they deem as good music.

But what is considered “good music”? According to industry executives, “good music” is “any music that can capture the attention of an audience.” However; for the demographic of listeners in their mid twenties to mid thirties, “good music” is music that’s worth listening to many years after, and whose lyrics has meaning and depth.

So if the music industry has released nothing but “good music” over the past ten years, then why is it that the demographic of listeners in their mid twenties, thirties and older doesn’t find it worth listening to?

After further discussion with Atlanta’s LS Muzik Group, a company representative says, “most of the music that is released today has a certain appeal that reflects the trend set during that time. If at that time, snap music or crunk music is the sound that’s in, then that’s what the trend will follow. It is rare that you’d find “good music” [from the likes of] a Neyo, R. Kelly, Usher, Mary J Blige, Anthony Hamilton, or Musiq Soulchild to name a few. Not including good folk, rap, country, gospel, blues, jazz, or alternative rock music from some great artists who are worth listening to also. But out of the few named, there’s really not that many artists today that has potential for longevity. These artists are force fed to the consumer just to make record sales. We truly doubt half of them will be around to play sold out arenas in the next ten years.”

Hoping to bridge the gap between the two demographics of listeners in their mid twenties to mid thirties, the company looks to bring back good music that is worth listening to by adapting the Motown approach by signing good talent and releasing heartfelt songs with meaning.

Although the idea to bring back good music is what LS Muzik Group intends to do, there’s still that certain group of listeners the company may struggle to gain. Mainly because the music industry have already captured the attention of this group over the past ten years with music that has a sound of its own, a sound that has captivated them with what LS Muzik Group deems as over synthesized sounds. It is unclear however, as to how the company plans to win over that demographic, when all they know is what the music industry have force-fed them.

And because of this, the dividing line between the two demographics has left a void in the music industry, simply because true music lovers aren’t as fascinated with listening to over synthesized sounds that has little to no substance. This has crippled record sales over the past ten years.

In spite of the clever marketing initiatives by the music industry to capture true music lovers, the effort hasn’t been significant enough to impact their decisions to enjoy listening to the music released today thereby causing most of the music released today to barely go gold or platinum. This is all due in part not only to the Internet, but because true music lovers in their mid twenties, thirties, and older who enjoy good music, are not buying what is most popular today. But if what’s popular is Trey Songz or Chris Brown, then how is it that either of the two artists survives in such an industry where their level of success or failure is dictated by their marketing, and not their music.

“Record companies have gotten somewhat smart on how they market and release artists. Their idea to market and release Chris Brown or Trey Songz on the same Tuesday as they would Robin Thicke or K Jon isn’t the same. Simply because record sales for Chris Brown or Trey Songz may be slim for the first week of release, that marketing and releasing Trey Songz against K Jon on the same date would immobilize their sales goal of going gold or platinum, against a more likely artist that can, who has a more mature fan base of true music lovers who enjoy listening to good music,” says one industry executive.

This scenario is all too common in the industry today, whereas album release dates are rescheduled all due in part to …

Event Decor Committee – What Are My Duties?

Event decorating for adults is a bit different than a typical children’s birthday party. Sure, you can decide on a theme and then search the Internet to see what’s available but 9 times out of 10, your search results are going to be geared towards children’s parties.

Some decorations can be adapted for use with either but I do not recommend decorating a grown up gala event with toilet paper and a few balloons. It will give your guests the impression that you did not care enough to plan and execute a decorating scheme. And, with a fund-raising event, this can be detrimental. You are asking guests to spend a lot of money to attend this event (babysitters, ticket prices, buy auction items, attire of the event, etc…). They want to be entertained, amused and feel they are important.

The other end of the spectrum is hiring an event planning service or having unlimited funds at your disposal. Neither of these options may suit your budget. If not, then it’s time to visit the “in-between” option.

Most events have a general committee made up of the Event Chairperson and sub-committee chairpersons. Decor is usually a sub-committee that deals with the decor planning for an event. This may include any number of areas within the event (room, table, buffet, auction tables, entrances, etc…) and I recommend it does cover all these areas and any other where any type of decor will be needed.

This will make it easier to keep track of the decorating budget and who’s responsible for what. I also recommend that the Decor Chairperson work closely with other committees that will also use the chosen “Theme”. It is necessary to have cohesion, a sense of continuity when a theme is involved.

For example, say you decided as a committee your theme will be “Ancient Egypt” and your color scheme will be gold, purple and teal. Great!

Now at a full meeting of all committees, you learn that the “Print/ Marketing” committee has decided to use a red font and a Fleur-de-leis on the invitation. Huh? Uh-oh: major “one hand does not know what the other hand is doing” scenario.

This can and should be nipped in the bud. A theme/mood and colors should be decided right from the start so that all committees are working toward the same end.

Duties could include the following (and anything else unique to your event).

    • Secure volunteers for your committee. (Remember to use anyone with a background, knowledge or contacts that could be useful to the decorating committee.

    • Decor should create an environment for the event. Make a detailed plan of all decor needs/wants.

    • Your plan for decorating should be in accordance with the rules of the venue and within the limits of the theme (if you have one).

    • Work with other committees where decor will overlap (i.e. food, entertainment, auction tables, invitations, etc…)

    • Purchasing decor, set-up and breakdown of decor

    • Reimbursement/purchase orders for decorations – report to Finance/Budget committee.

    • Keep General Chairperson in the loop of all your plans (communication beforehand can avoid problems later).

Following a POA (plan of action) can make your job as Decor Chairperson or committee member much easier. Research and pre-planning are key to a successful event. Have Fun! Let your creative juices flow and your event will be one to remember!

His Most Famous Painting (Metropolis) – Otto Dix

Famous Expressionist painter, Otto Dix (1891-1969), was born in Unternhaus, Germany. After finishing elementary school he went on to work locally as an apprentice and then in 1910 joined the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts. While his early works were ‘Expressionist’ & colorful, the World Wars and their aftermaths had majorly influenced Otto’s later strong works. The most significant influencer was his experience as a machine gunner in the German army during World War I. Many of Dix’s post war paintings show what Germany looked like in the 1920s, a reality not everyone was comfortable looking at. Dix’s grotesque depiction shocked most of German society, following the war. Two subjects he particularly focused on were soldiers crippled, killed, and forgotten in the war and the large number of prostitutes spread all over German cities, with the revelers having optimal fun. His most famous painting is the triptych “Metropolis” (1928), depicting the major elements of the German society post the World War I.

The left-hand panel of “Metropolis” depicts a crippled war soldier entering a poor area of Berlin and welcomed by a line of prostitutes beckoning. A man, probably a soldier is shown lying dead on the street. The central panel of the painting shows the prosperity of the city in the so-called German “Golden Twenties,” influenced by American jazz and dance. The right panel of the creation reflects flashy and classy prostitutes searching for clients in the more affluent parts of the city, depicted by the elaborate architecture. Therefore, the two side panels of the painting reflect the contrasts coexisting in German society at the same time.

Following the war, Dix’s paintings had become increasingly political and reflected his anger on the manner in which war wounded and crippled soldiers were treated in Germany. His paintings, such as “War Cripples” (1920), “Butcher’s Shop” (1920), and “War Wounded” (1922) reflected his views clearly. Dix spent six years on what are regarded as two of his famous pieces of art, “Metropolis” (1928) and “Trench Warfare” (1932). He painted several portraits of prostitutes either in the brothels or on the street. “The Salon” is one of the more famous of his representations of prostitutes. Dix’s creations splashed the shocking aspects of German society on canvas. To add, no one could miss out the significant intricacies of the realities behind his creations. He also started doing portraiture that focused on the worse traits and the weaknesses of his sitters, irrespective of the class of society they came from. Otto Dix died in Singen, Germany, in 1969, but not before he had given the world extraordinary creations such as the “Metropolis,” which presently graces Galerie der Stadt, Stuttgart, Germany.

Bi-Weekly or Monthly – Which Contacts Suit Your Eyes More?

Apart from daily disposables, the other two types of contacts are 2 Week Disposable lenses and Monthly Disposable contact lenses. You can make out the replacement period by the names itself. But each type of lens has two different wearing schedules – either remove the lenses each night before going to sleep & clean it properly or go to sleep wearing the lenses and continue wearing till the end of the tenure.

First, let enlighten you about bi-weekly disposables. These lenses, which can be worn within consecutive two weeks, are known as fortnightly lenses also. You can wear bi-weeklies in the waking hours as long as you wish but remove those, before calling it a day, to clean and not let the pathogens build up on the surface of the lens. However, there is one more option. Go for extended wear bi-weeklies. The silicone hydrogel made lenses are so soft & flexible that it allows seven times more oxygen supply into cornea, helping in maintaining high level of moisture throughout two weeks. These lenses can even fix myopia, astigmatism and are available in colours also. Acuvue Oasys with hydraclear, Acuvue advance for Astigmatism, Acuvue bifocal by Johnson & Johnson lenses are some of the top-of-the-line bi-weekly contacts.

Now, it is turn of monthly disposables. I am not repeating the manufacturing, replacement period and wearing schedules as from the name you had come to know that the wearing tenure is of one month and the rest is same as bi-weeklies. These lenses are usually prescribed for vision troubles related to cornea e.g. presbyopia and myopia. The wide range of monthly disposable contacts available in the market has some big names like Proclear, Soflens, Purevision contact lenses etc.

But, before opting for any lens, you must get your eyes checked by an eye doctor to determine the most suitable one for you. After all, it is for your eyes only.

With the manifestation of the benefits of using this tool in various industries, it Is easy to understand why a lot of people are interested to learn 3D rendering. But how does one become a 3D rendering professional?

There is no degree offering purely 3D rendering, but there are vocational schools for it and there are seminars, too. 3D rendering skills must also be matched with other skills in order to make money from it. This article will provide a quick overview of what a person needs to learn in order to become a 3D renderer.

    Graphic Design

Graphic artists will always be in demand because people will always look for beauty and order in things. They always want to be amazed visually and stunned by beauty. Those who want to be a 3D graphic designer may want to consider taking up graphic design or visual arts in college to hone their design skills. After all, what good are a person’s 3D rendering skills if the graphics he or she creates are not visually appealing?

Field to study: Fine Arts, Design

    Architecture

Human beings will always build structures because that’s how civilization grows. When it comes to building designs, architects are kings. Architects have a skill that’s important to a 3D renderer: drafting. Technical drawing, or the ability to make and interpret plans is a useful skill for any 3D rendering professional. Most 3D rendering companies like Power Rendering require this skill from their employees. Architects accept 3D architectural rendering jobs during their free time or they choose to do them full-time, that’s how lucrative they are.

    Fields to study: Architecture, Engineering

How Does Music Influence the Individual?

It is not clear how music influences the individual. Some experts insist that music and musicians influence young people. Other sources insist that certain individuals respond to particular types of music and musical expression. Either way, today’s youth can see how their favorite musicians dress and behave, both in public and in private, via the multiple media sources which are constantly monitoring the world’s celebrities. Young people can then elect to change their own appearance and behavior to reflect the musician and musical style that they most identify with.

Two separate, but related, theories explain how individuals relate to and express themselves through music. Social identity theory indicates that people “borrow” their identity from the society in which they live. The individual’s adopting of a group identity through music is a way for that person to conform to the ideals, goals, and norms of the society as a whole. The opposite of social identity theory says that some individuals elect to behave in a manner that is contrary to societal norms. These people prefer to adopt their own style and stand apart from everyone else. This is called personal identity theory. These theories are interrelated because, even though personal identity theory identifies the individual aspects of expression, the person is still identifying as a part of a sub-group.

Young people are more likely to subscribe to varying forms of identification through music; especially those forms that my not conform to the larger society. As young people move through the adolescent years and into young adulthood, they are more likely to explore and experiment with their own identity through music than older adults, who have likely settled into one genre that they identify with. Looking at music in this way makes it easier to see how it has always been, and remains, a socializing agent; a way for young people to explore their independence as they move away from the authority of their parents.

This perspective on music can hide the influence that music has on children. The music of the past century has played an important role in the lives of young adults, yet music may be having an expanding effect on individuals who are even younger. Remember that music has always been an important part of every society. Children are socialized through songs that are shared with them at many ages. Children’s songs can be as simple as songs that teach basic information, such as ABC’s and 123’s, and they can teach social skills and acceptable behavior (think Sesame Street and Barney). Still, children have access to the same music that young adults have access to; and sometimes this music is not age-appropriate. This phenomenon has ushered in the debates about whether or not exposure to certain musical influences is having a harmful effect on the nation’s youth.

Interestingly, one study has found that females are more likely to be influenced by music than males, although both genders find expression through music satisfying. This may be because females are typically socialized as members of a societal group and males are typically encouraged to be self-sufficient. The study’s authors believe that the socialization process makes females more susceptible to musical influences than males.

Artist’s Signatures – How Do They Change the Value of Art?

Signed in pencil, signed in the plate, what does all of this mean? The way a print is signed and it’s impact on the value of the art causes a great deal of confusion. You will see prints that are unsigned, signed in the plate, stamped signature, estate signed and signed with a blindstamp. There are no hard and fast rules about how an artist should sign their graphic art. It is more important to know what the normal procedure was for the time period and what the normal practice was for that particular artist.

Centuries ago, most artists never considered signing their art. Numbers of pieces are unsigned, but that does not mean that the artist is unknown or that it was not done or approved by him or that it has no value. Rembrandt, considered one of the greatest etchers did not sign a number of his etchings. Most of the modern masters, Picasso, Chagall, Miro, did not sign certain editions. This is when it is important to work with a knowledgeable dealer since unscrupulous people have forged pencil signatures on authentic art in order to command a higher price.

Signed in the plate means that the artist has signed their name in the matrix (wood, metal, stone, etc) so that it is printed within the art. This is the way that an artist would sign their work up until the 19th Century and many of the earlier artists would not have done that much if it had not be decreed by guild law. Generally speaking, because in art there are always exceptions, a plate signed work of art is more desirable than an unsigned piece, but is less desirable than one signed in pencil. Since artist from the 14th to late 19th Century did not sign their art in pencil, the lack of a pencil signature has no impact on the value.

Signed in pencil is usually the type of signature that collectors prefer.

It has become a tradition for the artist to sign their name in the lower margin under the image. They may also include the edition number, title and date. We can thank James McNeil Whistler for helping to introduce and promote the hand written signature at the end of the 19th century. The hand signed signature signified the integrity of the print, that it is original and distinctive from a reproduction. Whistler charged twice as much for his hand signed pieces than he did his other pieces from the same edition, even though there was no difference in the quality of the art. Seymour Haden would sign his name to any of his earlier unsigned etchings for a guinea. Picasso sold 15000 signatures for the Vollard Suite.

Unfortunately, the hand signed signature no longer has this same meaning since many artists sign and number their offset lithographic or giclee reproductive prints. Nor is this a new phenomenon, Kathe Kollwitz signed photolithographic reproductions of one of her aquatint series. Still, the implied message has remained and pieces that are hand signed generally are more valuable than ones that are not. What makes all of this very confusing is that it is possible to have a fake signature on an authentic work of art and an authentic signature on a reproductive work of art.

Sometimes, instead of hand signing the art or signing in the plate, an artist will use a stamp of their signature and apply it to the art, usually in the lower margin where you would normally find the hand signature. A stamped signature will sometimes be confused for a hand signed signature.

Heirs and estates have been creating posthumous editions or reproductive editions that bears a special signature. They sign the art to give the impression that it would have been authorized by the artist if they had not died. These signatures could be hand signed, stamped signatures or blindstamps by the heirs, museums or any authorized organization. The value of these is usually much lower than lifetime impressions. But of course, there are always exceptions!

    The Abbot of Canterbury

‘The Abbot of Canterbury’ is a title of the ballad that is taught in Intermediate classes in Pakistan. In it, the poet tells the story of abbot who was living in the splendid style of a great prince nearby London. He was very famous by his hospitality. He had fifty men who were wearing gold chains around him for his order. His name and fame was spread far and wide. When it was heard by the king John, who was ruling over England with main and might, he suspected the smell of treachery. He was very strange because he used to spend too much money for little benefit.

The abbot was summoned at his court and was told his crime. His crime was his earned wealth and reputation which the king suspected as treason against his kingdom. The abbot replied that he had honestly obtained property and never thought of any treason against his crown. The king was not satisfied by his answer and called it a major crime deserving a major punishment. Then he put before him a condition that if he answered his three questions, he would be forgiven. His property would be confiscated until he answered the questions. It means that if he failed to answer the questions, he would be beheaded and his property would be taken away.

The abbot was innocent and unknown to such difficulties. He asked his three questions. The kind told him the following three questions:

01 When I am on the throne and crown is on my head amid the noble persons, what is my exact value in one penny?

02 How much time I will take to journey the whole world?

03 What am I thinking now?

The abbot heard his questions and requested that the questions were out of his knowledge and wisdom and for their answers, he needed a time. The king gave him a time of three weeks for finding their answers; otherwise none would save him from the fixed punishment.

In dejection, he started his journey to search the answers. His intention was to meet the sages and discuss about the questions. He went to Oxford and Cambridge universities and discussed with the professors and the scholars but they failed to answer the questions. At last, he returned to face the cruel king and his punishment. On the way, he met his shepherd who welcomed him and asked happy news. The abbot told him bad news that made the shepherd sad. The shepherd asked him the three questions given by the king John. He assured him that he would answer the King John instead of him and would save him from the punishment.

The shepherd wore the ceremonial attire of his master and took other required things. He looked like the abbot of Canterbury and went to King John to answer him. He was welcomed there and asked about the answers of three questions. The shepherd replied that he had come to answer the questions. In response to the first question, he told that the price of the king would be twenty nine pence because the prophet Christ was sold among the Jews for thirty pence. So, his worth would be one penny less. Such answer astonished the king and there was no chance to object. He answered the second question that if the king got up early in the morning and ran with the speed of the sun, he would complete his journey around the world in twenty four hours. For the third question, he said that the king had thought that he was the abbot, but it was not so. He was the poor shepherd of the abbot.

King John was much pleased with his answers and announced for him a stipend of four nobles a weak. Apart from it, he was offered the post of abbot on his master’s place, but he refused because he was illiterate. The king forgave him and his master.

    Something about the ballad:

It is an old ballad of the south of England. It tells a story in a simple and traditional verse form. It consists of twenty seven stanzas. Each stanza is rhymed in same manner. The first line is rhymed with the second, and the third with the fourth. The ballads of the north are known best. They are composed in a dialect but they are hard to be understood. They contain some magnificent poetry and the moving stories. They are usually harsh and tragic. Ballads from the south of England are similar in form, but they are very different in spirit. The stories are mostly amusing and end happily.

This poem is anonymous because its authorship is unknown. It is not known who wrote the early ballads, nor is it easy to tell when they …

Theory Of The Nude In Art

My friends and family often ask me why so many artists paint (as they say) “naked people”. Some think that the nude is only pornography, while others just think that it’s out-dated in the art world. Most artists will tell you something along the lines of “we don’t see them as ‘naked’ we just see beauty”. Though this may be true, it doesn’t answer our question. As a classically trained artist myself I have a theory on why people make art using the nude. I think the first step in understanding the nude in art is to understand why people made them in the past, and why they continue to make them.

There are three basic categories of nudes, which are not necessarily mutually exclusive (sometimes they overlap):

The Ideal Nude: Originating with the Greeks, the ideal nude is just a concept really, the basis of which was most clearly explained by Plato. He stated that within all things there is a universal and divine “form” that defines it. For example: if you look at 100 trees, each individual tree will look different, yet they are all similar enough to categorize them as trees. What is the sameness or underlying quality of the tree which makes it a tree? This thing, this sameness, Plato called form. Greek artists took this idea and tried to find the ideal form of the human body. They used shapes in the human body, much like a musician would use musical notes to form a chord. The idea was to create a harmony through repetition and variation of certain visual elements of the body. Excellent examples of this are, of course, classical Greek and Roman sculpture, Leonardo da Vinci (who also could be mentioned in all of these categories for different works), Donatello, Rafael, and the Neo-classicists of the 19th century.

The Observed Nude: Originating in the Fayum portraits of ancient Greece in a technique of painting called Encaustic, which uses wax as a medium for pigment instead of oil or water. The main purpose of this originated in portraiture and was all about trying to capture the individual’s personality and particular appearance. Great examples of this can be found in the paintings of Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and ancient Roman portrait busts.

The Expressive Nude: This form is intended to do just what the name implies. The nude is used here as the main vehicle for the artist’s expression, usually with emotive, and in the case of the Renaissance, devotional purposes. Great examples would be the work of Michelangelo (who could be classified under ideal nude as well) and most of the artists of the modern period: Rodin, Picasso, Matisse, Kathe Kollwitz, Edvard Munch, and Paul Gauguin etc…

I would like to rephrase our original question in the interest of brevity and to be more specific. “Why is it that the most recurring subject in all of art history by far is the human face and body?” Modern scientific research also gives us a clue to the reasons behind our question. The human face and the human body are psychologically stimulating to the mind. Our brains are actually hard wired to recognize human form. Take, for example, a chimpanzee. If you look at three different chimps for 5 seconds, would you be able to tell them apart as individuals? Now if you look at three human faces for 5 seconds, I bet your success rate will be much greater. But a chimp can recognize and differentiate between other chimps much easier, just as you can recognize a human face much easier.

You might say, OK I understand why we look at faces, that makes sense, but why nude? Well there are multiple reasons. First (and least important to me) is tradition. There is a long tradition predating even the Egyptians of recreating the human body. So, as a method of teaching art, there are lots of people who have done it before and so there are a lot of excellent techniques and examples for artistic training that have been developed which apply to other forms of art as well. Second, it is a test of skill. If one can make a believable representation of something that we are so familiar with, then everything else is a piece of cake. If I paint a chimpanzee you would be less critical of whether it looks real or not than a human face, simply because most of us don’t see chimps every day for our entire lives. Some artists get caught up in this challenge for perfection and are never satisfied with their degree of skill, (I know I never am) and so continue to pursue impossible perfection even though most people might not see the minute faults of the work which the artist does. -The next …

Your 10th Valentine’s Day Together Can Be Special With These Ideas

Whether this is your first Valentine’s Day together or the tenth, it is always a red-letter day in the calendar of lovers. Some things in life just get better with age!

If time has rolled on towards your 10th Valentine’s Day together, chances are that the two of you have already exchanged your wedding vows, or are probably living together. The fact that you are still together is itself a huge cause for celebration and what better day than Valentine’s Day to reinforce your love for one another?

On your 10th Valentine’s Day, surprise your sweetheart/ better half with some mushy, spicy and out-of-the-ordinary gifts that will linger on in her memory for a long, long time. And the best gifts don’t require you to break the bank, just your head! For creative and original ideas, of course!

    1. A romantic Valentine’s picnic — right in your home!

February is still pretty cold in most parts of the world. And the perfect time for getting cuddly on the hearth. Throw some comfortable rugs near a roaring fire, keep champagne flutes handy and raise a toast of sparkling wine to each other. Chocolate-dipped strawberries make a great accompaniment — they are also a known aphrodisiac. Snuggle against each other and watch the leaping flames stoke the fires of your own passion.

    2. Turn your home into a love nest

Nothing like a romantic touch (or two) to turn an ordinary evening into a sizzling hot one! If she is at work, start your preparations early and if she isn’t, send her out on some errand. Once you have the run of the place, get down to work. Turn off all the lights in the house, leaving the one that leads to the bedroom switched on. To create a really sensuous ambience, consider having that light dimmed or replace it with a pathway of candles. Leave a trail of rose petals from the front door till the bedroom. In the bedroom, concentrate on the bed itself. Sprinkle rose petals on the bed as well. Have plenty of aromatic candles lit in the room, and soft music playing in the background. Keep a bouquet of red roses on the bed and your gift tantalisingly left half-open. And wait for the fireworks!

    3. Get seriously romantic!

This means a no-expenses spared Valentine’s Day that she’ll recall in wonder long after the day has become a memory. In layman’s language, this roughly translates into an elaborate candlelight dinner, complete with food for the tongue and soul! But, not in a boring restaurant. If weather permits, have a private candlelit dinner on the beach, besides the crashing waves.

If you have the moolah, splurge on a surprise romantic dinner at an undisclosed destination. Send her a cryptic message if she’s at work, that simply says, “Be dressed and ready at 7PM”. Arrange for a limousine to pick her up from home and whisk her to where you would be waiting for her. The moment she steps into the private room that you have booked for her, let unseen musicians softly serenade her even as a hundred candles light up all around her. Even as she is recovering from the surprise, appear by her side and slip your gift into her hands — it could be a diamond ring, a gold and diamond necklace or a pair of ruby and diamond earrings. Just make sure it is precious and rare — just like her.

    4. ‘Memory Album’

Women are known to be sentimental creatures, but show her your softer side as well with a gift that is as priceless as it is special. Compile a scrapbook of sorts that has photographs of all the past nine Valentine’s Day. Devote one page to each. Stick memorabilia of those moments — maybe the wrapper of the first chocolate that she gave you (you may feel silly, but we guarantee that she won’t see it that way), or her lipstick-stained tissue which you have still preserved. Write your love messages below each photograph, praising and referring to some quality of hers. Wrap the book in soft velvet or satin and, for a greater impact, tie it with a strand of freshwater pearls.

    5. A Valentine’s gift that celebrates her passion

Apart from you, what else turns her on? Is she crazy about collecting porcelain objects? Stun her with a surprise visit to Tuscany, home to the famed glazed pottery. Revel in her delighted squeals as she handpicks some truly exquisite pieces of the renowned Deruta, Gubbio or Montelupo ceramics to add to her collection. She might even turn your home into an Italian-themed heaven!

    6. Recreate your first Valentine’s Day

The two of share a special bond that time or proximity has not managed to weaken. If anything, the two …

The Pros and Cons – Painting Mediums and Consistency

Painters use different types of paint, these are known as the painting mediums and They are usually oil, alkyd and acrylic. Of the different types of painting mediums, the most expensive paint to use is oil. This type of paint is regarded as the best quality. Oil painting is luminous and very rich. Due to the consistency and oiliness of this paint it takes a long time to dry. It is quite possible that an oil painting could take anything from twenty four hours to ninety six hours and more to dry thoroughly.

Another painting medium is acrylic. If you use acrylic paint it can dry almost immediately. In fact there are artists who say acrylic can dry on the brush. This is a good indication that you have to work fast. Acrylic is water based but the colors are extremely vivid. Acrylic painting as opposed to oil painting is cheaper.

Lastly is the painting medium alkyds. These are oil based and these are often used to mix into oil paints. It helps make the oil paint go further. It should be noted that acrylic paints cannot be mixed with oil paint.

If you are learning about paints you must also know about painting mediums. A painting medium is the agent used by painters to mix paint from the tube. A medium can be used for many purposes such as: color enrichment, color depth, thinning paint, addition to varnish, thickening paint, lengthening life of paint.

There are many different kinds of painting mediums for the painter’s use. It is very important that you understand the exact uses, limitations and safety measures of the mediums you choose to use. It would be accurate to say that painters tend to have their own favorite art mediums. Mediums are used to create special effects. For example, damar and copal add shine to oil paint and they also make the color richer. Distilled turps and linseed oil are less complex. If a painter needs to retouch dried matte he or she will opt for varnish.

Painting mediums can be combined but today you can buy these ready mixed. It is important to use only turps that is distilled and not ordinary turps. The smell of turps is very strong and so contemporary artists use an improved product known as turpenoid. This modern product has no smell at all.

If you are using acrylics then your painting medium would simply be water. This is because acrylics are water based. As acrylics dry so fast you may want to keep them wet for as long as possible. To do this you would use extenders and retarders. In general, a tutor will teach his or her students that any medium must be used in very small quantities. The reason for this is to keep the layers of paint stable when on the canvas. Many beginners are shown that the more turps that is used the thinner the paint becomes. An easy medium to mix is that of a tiny amount of linseed oil with a tiny amount of distilled turps. It is important to use the right quantity painting medium in order to keep the right consistency of paint.

    Warehouse Artist Studios

An artist/bohemian type working for themselves is perceived in a variety of ways by the general public. A lot of the perception has to do with a combination of the artist’s cashflow and apparel strategy, as opposed to the stirrings of their soul. Strangely, as a young man, people often saw me as a responsible, solid guy. Ha!

In the early eighties I ran my screen printing operation out of a funky old warehouse by the railroad tracks in Eugene, Oregon. Enormous pastry and coffee in hand, I’d get to my shop a bit past nine and dig in for the day. Usually I’d run out of work between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, leaving the rest of the day to run, draw comics and hang out.

Being that the economy had had the shit kicked out of it just then, I was moderately proud that I’d been able to scape up enough business to keep a roof over my head… ultimately I turned enough of a profit to embark on my checkered career publishing my own wacky comic books, but that’s not the subject of this rant.

Warehouse Artists Studios was the literal name of the co-op warehouse wherein I rented space. The studio took up the second floor of a truly dilapidated old funkster warehouse that had most recently been used to store spices. Add to that the gay girls who lived illegally in the space next to mine, burning patchouli oil night and day. This place had a certain bouquet!

I’d been printing T-Shirt jobs out of my flat, and it was getting a bit ridiculous. At an opening in a local gallery, I saw a flyer for “Warehouse Artist Studios”, a 5000 square foot space that magically divided up the floor into 170 square foot units that rented for forty bucks a month. I went down the next day and rented two adjacent spaces, which apparently I’d be paying $75 or $80 a month for. A slight, nervous man named Lynn rented my space to me. He was the manager, he had a chair upholstering business in the studio. Straight away, I could see ‘ol Lynn was a duck seriously out of water.

This impression was dramatically confirmed like three days later when Lynn informed me that the Warehouse was failing economically, and that he was resigning as manager. He handed me the studio ledger and checkbook saying “you seem like an astute fellow, why don’t you manage this dump?”.

I was rather taken aback at this, but sure enough at the next meeting of the co-op, the members all but begged me to save their studio. I had my serious doubts, but figured there wasn’t much to lose, so why not? It wasn’t lost on me either that as manager my rent for my 340 square foot space dipped to $35.00 per month!

The co-op had about 12 members. We were several hundred dollars in the hole. We could pay rent, but couldn’t pay the heating bill. We were required to carry basic liability insurance, which had gone unpaid and lapsed, for starters. I sat down and did a bit of math. I figured if we raised the rent on the basic space about $10.00 a month for five months, and attracted a couple new members, we’d squeak by and could continue renting the dump.

The measure passed at the next meeting. At least with the eight or nine people who decided to stick it out, as a couple members dropped out with the news of the temporary rent increase; we did indeed need to attract new members straight away. We papered the town with flyers for the warehouse, and got free listings in any newspaper we could. Miraculously, the plan worked. We lowered the basic rent back to $40.00 per month ahead of schedule and got an infusion of fresh blood. I can’t take too much credit for it, as the place snapped to with an esprit de corps I’ve rarely encountered… I’d say it was goddamn grassroots socialism is action, almost.

Now here comes the fun part, the personalities that made the place click, the swashbucklers, crackpots, con men, assholes, and outright brilliant geniuses I encountered in my stint at Warehouse Artist Studios. First comes a woman named Kathy Caprario. She was a dramatic beauty from New York of Italian descent, the best known painter in Eugene, an “older woman” to me of maybe 33-35 years (I was all of 24 at the time). Kathy is the person who was singlehandedly most responsible for the survival of Warehouse Artist Studios at the time of the financial crises. To say she was resourceful and a bit of an aggressive shark is an understatement. For starters, she marched me down to see the owner of the …
